The ruins of Sigiriya city located in the middle of Sri Lanka surprise the people who come here. Looking at the remains present in the ruins, it seems that this must have been a huge city, which must have been the capital of some king.

This city is situated on a high hill, whose construction technique still amazes archaeologists. This is an example of brilliant engineering of that time. Some people believe that there was an important Buddhist monastery here, but on the basis of the objects found here, some people say that this was the palace of Lankan king Ravana mentioned in the Hindu religious text Ramayana.

The city is at an altitude of 180 meters
Sigiriya city is today one of the most famous monuments of Sri Lanka, which is counted among the wonders of the world. Sigiriya is also known as the Lion’s Rock, whose height is said to be 180 meters. It is so high that the rock is visible from outside the forest. According to written records, it used to be the capital of King Kashyap. Some people also believe that King Kashyap had prepared this place as his palace. At present, this monument is included in the UNESCO heritage.

There is said to be a lift in Sigiriya
There are many historians who connect Sigiriya with Lankapati Ravana mentioned in Ramayana. It is said that about 5 thousand years ago, there was Ravana’s palace on top of this mountain, which was built by Kuber. It is said that 1000 stairs were used to reach this palace. Also, lift was used to go to the top of the palace. Just imagining an elevator five thousand years ago is thrilling.

There are many caves in Sigiriya
If you look below this rocky mountain, many caves are visible, it is believed that Ravana, after kidnapping Sita, kept her in one of these caves. There are many paintings inside the caves, it is said that these paintings are of Ravana’s many wives. Leaving aside mythology, Sigiriya was once considered a Buddhist monastery. It is believed that Buddhist monks used to live here till the 14th century, although there is no evidence of this fact.
