Whenever you go to any shop to buy a fridge or AC, you see AC-fridges with different ratings. These stars are issued by the Indian Bureau of Energy Management (BEE). It comes under the Ministry of Energy of the Government of India. This reveals energy efficiency parameters.
This is how ratings are decided
The ratio of input and output of AC or refrigerator is called energy efficiency ratio. If this ratio ranges from 2.7 to 2.89 then one star rating is given. Whereas two star rating ranges from 2.9 to 3.9, three star rating ranges from 3.1 to 3.29 and four star rating ranges from 3.3 to 3.49. Those whose energy efficiency ratio is more than 3.5 are given five star rating. The higher the star rating, the less power consumption. Apart from this, the cooling performance will also be equally good. Because appliances with higher ratings have better insulation.

Now you might be thinking that electricity is the only benefit, but it is not so. Three star rated refrigerators also make more noise than five star rated fridges and ACs. It can be understood that products with less stars require more effort, while those with more stars require less effort. A big difference between three star and five star rated AC is that its compressor and condenser are much better. Due to which you do not need much maintenance and spend less money. However, while buying an AC, you have to spend more money for a five star as compared to three star.
